Established in 1982, Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) is the first comprehensive graduate school in Iran. In particular, majority of Ph.D. programs in basic sciences and engineering were initially offered at TMU. As an elite exclusively postgraduate university, its primary mission is to train academic staff and researchers for universities and higher education centers as well as providing an environment for world class research. TMU currently offers M.A/M.Sc. degrees in 171 academic programs and Ph.D. degrees in 132 academic programs, with more than 7300 and 3700 students in each level, respectively. At present, there are 17 faculties and 14 affiliated research centers in the university. The university enjoys the cooperation of more than 700 fulltime academic members.

Tmu History

Tarbiat Modares University was Established in 1982, Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) is the first comprehensive graduate school in Iran. In particular, most Ph.D. programs in basic sciences and engineering were initially offered at TMU. As an elite exclusively postgraduate university, its primary mission is to train academic staff and researchers for universities and higher education centers as well as well as to provide a world-class research environment TMU currently offers MA./MSc. degrees in 171 academic programs and Ph.D. degrees in 132 academic programs, with more than 5209 and 4021 students in each level, respectively. At present, there are 17 faculties and 23 affiliated research centers in the university. The university enjoys the cooperation of more than 748 full time academic members.

It is noteworthy that according to the latest ranking of Iranian universities in respect of production of science released in ISI database of Islamic World Science Citation Center, Tarbiat Modares University has achieved the first place.

Tmu Goals

Tarbiat Modares University, which was founded after the glorious Islamic Revolution in Iran, as a leading University in respect of education, research, production and promotion of advantageous knowledge, extending the boundaries of knowledge and technology, and it is determined, as a scientific, Islamic identity and revolutionary leader, to achieve the following goals on the basis of the objectives set out in the University’s Statutes and its strategic plan:

• To train pious and committed-to-the-Islamic-Revolution faculty members and researches for the scientific fields required by Iranian universities and higher educational and research centers, and for the purpose of promotion of scientific and educational and research quality and also helping with development of higher education and effect fundamental changes therein.
• To participate in development and support of science production and movement and software movement and increase in our share in scientific products and development of humanities, upon emphasis on Islamic fundamentals and national needs and modern technologies and bring the scientific and research achievements into practical use through dynamic and constructive interaction with scientific regional and international centers.
• To undertake efforts for the achievement of Islamic culture by strengthening and deepening religion insight and expanding ethical virtues and enhancement of social participations and dissemination of self devotion and hope for the future on the basis of Quranic doctrine, Ahl-ul-bayt’s teachings and values and goals of the Islamic Revolution.
• To create a dynamic and creative learning environment and educate instructors, researchers and entrepreneurs who are committed and loyal to the Islamic Revolution.
• To achieve, maintain and develop the research standing and increase in our share in academic and scientific productions at national, regional and international level.
• To boost and expand fields of humanities and establish liaison with cultural, social and policymaking centers; initiate software movement, develop modern technologies (including microtechnology, biotechnology, information and communication, environmental, aerospace and nuclear technologies), and bring into practical use and commercialize the scientific and research achievements
• To enjoy manpower who are talented, mature and creative, pious, faithful to guardianship of the Islamic Jurist and the regime of Islamic Republic of Iran
• To develop and promote the quality of provision of services to students
• To sustainably improve the executive and scientific management of the university
• To provide up-to-date hardware and software facilities and equipment
• To promote collaboration with scientific & cultural centers at national, regional and international levels

• To foster Islamic culture and sciences, strengthen religious virtues and faith and disseminate self-devotion morale and hope for the future on the basis of Quranic doctrine, Ahl-ul-bayt’s instructions and the Islamic Revolution’s values.

Articles of Association:

The amendment for TMUs Articles of Association was ratified in the 607th session of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution held in 26th of June, 2007.

Article 1:

Tarbiat Modares University hereinafter referred to as university in this articles of association, is an auspicious progeny of Islamic Revolution which is founded for an unlimited period of time. It is an avant-garde university engaged in academic and research activities striving to promote lucrative science with the purpose of expanding the knowledge and technology boundaries on the basis of revolutionary and Islamic values and pursues the following objectives:

1. Training committed and qualified faculty members and researchers in the scientific fields required for the universities and higher education centers of Iran in order to boost the quality of academic, research and scientific works and assist the promotion of higher education studies.
2. Participation in the expansion and fortification of knowledge and software generation movement and escalation of Iran’s share of scientific products, and promotion of humanity sciences with an emphasis on Islamic principles and national needs, modern technologies and utilization of new scientific and research achievements through dynamic and constructive interactions with regional and international scientific centers.
3. Striving to realize the Islamic culture through the strengthening and deepening of religious ideology and expansion of ethical virtues and social participation and dissemination of self-abnegation spirit and optimism on the basis of Quranic teachings, holy Imams guidelines and values and ideals of Islamic Revolution.

Article 2:

The University is a legal entity belonging to the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. It follows certain specific financial and administrative rules and regulations, which will be ratified by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution. Its budgets shall be spent under the supervision of the Science, Research and Technology Minister.

Article 3:

The headquarter of the university is located in Tehran and the establishment of affiliated branches in other national or international places requires the approval of the University Council and the ratification of the Board of Trustees in compliance with the established rules and regulation.

Article 4:

The main foundations of the University include:

2. The University Council
3. The Chancellor

Article 5:

The Board of Trustees shall consist of the following:

1. Iran’s current president
2. Vice president
3. The minister of Science, Research and Technology
4. The minister of Health, Treatment and Medical Education
5. The university chancellor
6. Six cultural or scientific national figures who will be nominated by the minister of Science, Research and Technology and after being approved by the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution, shall be appointed for 5 years in this board.

Note: The chairman of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution shall issue the appointment decree for the members mentioned in clause 6 above. These individuals can be nominated for a second term.
